Her success has been unprecedented in American politics-until her 2008 run, no woman had won so much as a single state in a Presidential primary-and it has also been a more or less isolated event. Hillary Clinton made it closer to the Presidency than any woman ever has. Jeering at the opposition is standard practice. You can write all this off as standard political ugliness. On November 15, Breitbart published a piece with the headline "HILLARY CLINTON SCREAMING OBSCENITIES AND THROWING OBJECTS IN ELECTION NIGHT MELTDOWN." (The, uh, "report" hit its high point with an allegation of meltdown-induced spousal abuse: "Bill appeared the following day at Hillary's belated concession speech wearing a purple tie but, thankfully, no purple marks about his face, suggesting experience dictated avoidance.") Ed Klein, a conservative writer whose 2014 book on Clinton was dropped by HarperCollins for not passing a fact-check, popped up on November 9 to claim that an anonymous source assured him Clinton "couldn't stop crying" when she learned she had lost-"it was even hard to understand what she was saying, she was crying so hard. People, particularly men, fantasize about this all the time, and the fact of her loss provided them with an irresistible opportunity for fanfic. Or, more precisely, to see her as a loser to see her broken, defeated, in pain. There is, however, an enduring desire in certain circles to see Hillary Clinton lose. We know what happened we know how it happened and, most importantly, we have no real need to know either of the above, because there is no ambiguity-probably not a single person remains unaware that Hillary Clinton lost the 2016 election. The point is that, even though candidates' concession calls are traditionally kept private, in Hillary Clinton's case, that privacy has already been violated. (Fantasies about "touching every nerve of Hillary Clinton's body" are no doubt awkward to admit to publicly, but claiming you've actually done it is just plain rude.) Readers are asked for forgive Allen and Parnes' purple prose here-as well as the excerpt's brief foray into sci-fi, as Allen and/or Parnes apparently use their Sense8 powers to project themselves into Hillary Clinton's body and report her deepest inner emotions. "I'll be supportive of the country's success, and that means your success as president." Trump credited her for being a smart opponent who ran a tough campaign. "Congratulations, Donald," she said, suppressing the anger that touched every nerve in her body. Hillary took Huma's phone and faked a smile with her voice. This was the full exchange, as per Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes' recent book Shattered: As several outlets have pointed out, we already know what was said on that call-and it consisted of nothing but empty politeness on both sides. Nor is the call intrinsically interesting or dramatic. First off: There is literally no informational value to releasing the call nothing new can be learned, and no public interest will be served by it.
